Centralis’ Jennifer Canady participates in UX4Good
January 28, 2011: User Experience Specialist Jennifer Canady joined colleagues from around Chicago to participate in UX4Good. In this inaugural annual event, an individually selected group of talented designers applied their skills to tackle some of the big social issues facing the world today.
Jennifer’s team lent their expertise to Streetwise, a local social services organization in Chicago who helps the unemployed and the unemployable obtain subsistence income and develop business skills. Streetwise is facing many challenges, including higher unemployment numbers and fewer donations. They rely heavily on magazine sales for a large portion of their operating budget. With fewer magazines being sold, Streetwise is at a crisis point. The team was able to construct a new awareness campaign for Streetwise and offer actionable ideas on how to take their print magazine into the digital age. Many members of the team intend to continue working with Streetwise to help continue to make an impact for the unemployed in the Chicago area. The event was a great success for the participants and the organizations involved.
The first organized effort of UX for Good is UXXU 2011, a wildly ambitious effort to design systemic solutions for some of the most vexing social challenges. On January 28th and 29th, 40 top UX designers and 10 gifted visual designers convened in Chicago to tackle problems that matter in the first-ever design competition of its kind. Assisting the designers were executives from the leading non-profit organizations addressing those challenges and some of the most interesting, creative thinkers we can find.
