Centralis and Warner Home Video set new standards for Blu-ray menu design
July 29, 2008: Centralis and Warner Home Video have defined new standards for Blu-ray Disc menu usability and appeal. These standards provide a compelling viewing experience by helping Blu-ray users more easily access movies, adjust settings and explore special features.
Watching a movie at home should be a fun, relaxing experience, but navigating disc menus can be cumbersome and frustrating. To provide an enjoyable interaction with the expanded content and features available on the Blu-ray Disc format, Warner Home Video asked Centralis to establish a set of guidelines for Blu-ray Disc menu design.
Centralis brought users into Centralis Lab to test five distinct approaches to disc menu design. Users were asked to play the movies, turn on subtitles, move to specific scenes and explore special features like Director’s Cuts and deleted scenes. Centralis used the results from usability testing to design a template for Blu-ray menus that help viewers explore content efficiently while providing an enjoyable, engaging experience.
Warner Home Video will begin incorporating the new standards on its home video releases for the 2008 holiday season.
